Today we got up at 7:00am this morning because today was a very special day. It was the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge! We drove out to a parking lot where we eventually got in the line the went on for like a kilometre. After about an hour and a half, we got to a shuttle bus and got on. Once we got to the ridge, we were met by another hoard of people. We eventually made our way through hundreds of people and found a spot to watch the ceremony. Brett then found a more open spot so we moved there. There was a long wait until the ceremony so I layed down on the grass with my coat over my head. I think I actually fell asleep? After my beauty nap, I really took a good look at the monument. It is just so overpowering. With its two tall pylons and its many statues going up them, it was amazing. It had such a large presence because it reminds you what happened there.Once the ceremony began, they introduced everyone like Justin Trudeau, the Prince of Wales, etc. Lots of people read diaries of Canadian men during the battle. The presidents, prime ministers, and princes also said their speeches. It was a very moving ceremony. During the ceremony was a flyover by some replica WWI biplanes and at the end, after the Last Post was a flyover by some Mirage fighter jets. When it was over, we waited for an hour to get out and once we did, we went back to the hotel, sunburnt and tired.
(Half the washrooms didn’t work so there were approximately 32 bathrooms for 30,000 people. Rachel was in a line for two hours!)
